Recommended Reading on Genesis and/or Exodus

I was just asked what books to recommend to an older woman recovering in the hospital who wanted to read something relatively new and good on either Genesis or Exodus. These are what popped to mind. Would others have a different list?

Kevin,
Of course. I've added it to the post.

I don't know what this woman's educational background is. The Brueggemann and Fretheim volumes are excellent.

I'd also recommend Eugene F. Roop's commentary on Genesis from the Believer's Church Bible Commentary (http://www.heraldpress.com/books/bcbcgenesis.htm ) --a series which keeps abreast of scholarship but is definitely written for the Church.

The Exodus volume from Waldemar Janzen in that same series is also very helpful: http://www.heraldpress.com/books/bcbcexodus.htm

Geared especially for laity but beyond most Sunday School material is Page H. Kelley's _Journey to the Land of Promise: Genesis-Deuternony_ in the "All the Bible" series by Smyth & Helewys. http://www.helwys.com/books/kelley.html
