Summer Hebrew at VTS Launched Today
Today, August term 2007 classes got under way, and I started the Hebrew alphabet with a class of 25. By all accounts, we are off to a fine start.
My thanks to one of the students, Tracey Kelly, for emailing a few neat learning resources. The first is a Website with flashcards for learning the Hebrew alphabet (click here). The second is a set of video-podcasts of the Hebrew alphabet (in a southern accent!) by Lee Roy Martin (click here).
Speaking of video-podcasts, there is one on the origins of the alphabet by David L. Adams available free at i-Tunes (open i-Tunes, click here, and select video 13, session 7/3).

So weird to NOT be there for August term!!
the theory that i mentioned about the origin of a true (= with vowels) alphabet is very well expressed in the nifty book Homer and the Origin of the Greek Alphabet by Barry B. Powell. it has not, by any means, achieved any kind of consensus. but it's a fun story.
Bingham and I should have recorded ourselves singing the alphabet...we kept it up all three years...we sing the echo song...I think you should use it with the new students!

Oh, I remember August term Hebrew so fondly!! Those were some really good times. Lisa and I definitely sang the aleph-bet song all three years and all over campus. I still sing through it in my head when I need to look up something in the dictionary - the song is how I know the order of the letters (I do the same thing in english). I also really enjoyed the songs we learned in second year hebrew when reviewing the paradigms.
Hebrew is so useful. I even used it today at the farmer's market when the checkout lady had some Hebrew letters tattooed at the base of her neck at the collar bone... hmmm... ok, maybe that's not the best example of its usefulness. But I definitely use it for my preaching also.

ok, now I regret not doing Hebrew with y'all! wow, I had NO idea that it would have usefulness at the Farmer's Market!
Now Bingham, I want to hear more about this story about the tatooed lady!

I relate to all of this...so funny to see Eliz. make a comment having known her in the earliest days of Hebrew! Dr. Cook...it sounds like you've got a good group of folks up there. For any of you kids reading from home, keep up with that Hebrew! You won't know how much you miss it until it's gotten kind of foggy in your memory.
