Suspension of National Unity Government in Sudan
I've just come from a very good presentation by Father Joseph and by Phoebe Roaf on biblical language instruction at Renk Theological College in Sudan. The forum was well attended and enjoyed by all. Of concern is the breaking news that the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) has jsut said it is suspending its participation in the National Unity Government because its northern partners have failed to implement parts of the 2005 deal that ended Sudan's 21-year civil war. Salva Kiir (pictured here), South Sudan's President and Sudan's Vice-President, warned recently there could be a return to war if the terms of the 2005 deal (the CPA--comprehensive peace agreement) continued to be disrespected. The southerners are complaining that the rest of the government is not consulting Mr Kiir.

Lauren Stanley has emailed the following: Joseph and I were at the Embassy today, talking with Aban, who says that the Southerners are not going back until the "contentious issues" are worked out. Those issues would be the demarcation (border), which is quite dicey, since some of the old maps show that the North-South border has been creeping ever deeper into the South; the removal of SAF troops from the South (13 percent of the original number are still south of anybody's border, including close to 10,000 in or near Renk; the removal of SPLA troops from disputed territory (mainly north of Renk and over in the Nuba Mountains); the election process, which is well delayed; the Abyei problem (no commission even set up there, despite a two-year delay); and, of course, our friend oil. Lord knows how this will work out. THe SPLA has yet to issue a formal statement that we can read yet ...

Here is news (via Jackie Kraus) from the bishop of Renk, Sudan:
"Dear Friends,
This is troublesome. Bishop Daniel reported by phone yesterday that the north and south armies were facing each other, at some points only 1 or 2 kilometers apart, on his way from KHT to Renk. He said anything can happen and asks for our prayers. Let us join together in prayer support during these uncertain times.
