"Not the Only Way," Say Most Religious Americans

According to the survey, 70 percent of Americans with a religious affiliation now say that their religion is not the only way to salvation. The numbers are slightly lower, but still well over 50% among attendees of evangelical churches. Fifty-seven percent of those in this category said they believe that many religions can lead to eternal life.

i know it's a constant question, but it's one i still don't understand.
indeed, a Christian should really have a lot of problem with it!
Christians believe we are saved by Jesus Christ, not by Christianity. (this was a key point for the neo-orthodox theologians, but hardly original to them!)
the question presumes an attitude in which religion, or religious practice, is some kind of road, which "can lead to eternal life" or something like that. this is so foreign to my own conception of religion, and religious life, that i haven't a clue how i could respond, let alone what i would say.
and then of course the question assumes that the point of religion is "salvation" or "eternal life", which are pretty distinctively Christian goals, as any passing student in intro-to-religious-studies should be able to explain.
it just leaves me entirely befuddled.
