Re: Jonah and the Great Fish

I've posted once or twice before in connection with my fondness for whales, partially stimulated by some of my mentors' private whale collections related to the wonderful story of Jonah. Here is a stone whale splashing up out of wooden waves from China. Cathy and I viewed it recently here in north D.C. at the National Arboretum.

Mike, Glad you found us. And, you are in good company--the Hebrews were equally terrified of whales!

Any idea what types of whales the Hebrews might have experience with....? Are there whales today in the Eastern Mediterranean ... ? Also, I thought the translation was closer to "fish" than "whale"...but maybe the two were pretty synonymous at the time...

Hi Peter! Of course you are right, the actual Hebrew is simply: דג גדול. I found a nice WebSite on whales today in the Mediterranean: http://www.whale-watch.org/whales.nsf/EnglishHome
